Sluicing signals are shown whenever natural sluicing is being carried out north of the Northern lock or whenever there is being pumped with more than one pump.
The following signs are displayed:
1.
- on the semaphore at the top of the Harbour Operations Centre;
- on the strip of land between the Hoogovens Steel Works and the Outer Sluicing Canal;
- on the eastern point of the island near the Northern Lock;
- at the Velser Tunnel on the northern shore;
- on the western bank of the side Canal C;
- on the western point of the side Canal G (Zaanse Gat).
2.
Beginning one hour before sluicing three horizontal red lights are displayed:
- on the strip of land between the Hoogovens Steel Works and the Outer Sluicing Canal;
- on the eastern point of the island between the sluicing canals and the Northern Lock.

The Hydro Meteo Advice Service IJmuiden is accommodated at the Lock Coordination Centre. This bureau provides tidal information for the deep draft vessels bound for lJmuiden/Amsterdam.
