Port Information Zaandam

Zaanstad is an industrial city on the north bank of the North Sea Canal, opposite the Amsterdam port area. A number of companies specialize in the processing of foodstuffs.

Commodities handled in Zaanstad are cocoa beans, starch, edible oils and fats and large quantities of timber. Two subsidiaries of multinationals, Gerkend and ADM Cocoa, process about one third of the European cocoa bean consumption. The beans are processed into cocoa powder, cocoa butter or cocoa liquid, the basic ingredients for chocolate production. Before transportation to the mills cocoa beans are stored in bulk in Amsterdam and Zaandam silos and warehouses. One of the largest Dutch timber importers, PontEecen, has its terminal in the Wim Thomassenhaven.

The gantry crane of the Zaandam container terminal handles inland waterway container carriers. Containers are increasingly shipped via inland waterways throughout Europe.
