Maximum speed
Vessels with a draft up to 4 m. 18 km/hour
Vessels with a draft of 4 to 8 m. 14 km/hour
Vessels with a draft over 8 m. 12 km/hour

Signals for draft of 8 m. or more
Ships having a draft of 8 m. or more, must carry a black cylinder at the foremasthead in daytime and three red vertical lights under each other at night.

Deck cargo
It is forbidden to carry cargo on deck, reaching beyond the ship's side: however, a permit to make an exception to this rule can be given in writing by the harbourmaster on certain conditions. Permission from the Head Lock-master for passing the locks will be processed and cleared in collaboration with the Traffic Centre.

Reasonable speed
Masters are obliged to reduce speed when passing harbour entrances, moored craft or other objects that may be damaged by backwash. Such objects are usually marked as follows:
by day: red-white flag;
by night: a red light over a white light with a distance of 2 to 3 feet (0.5 to 1.0 metre).

Tunnels across the North Sea Canal
Velsertunnel, Wijkertunnel, Hemtunnel, Coentunnel, lJtunnel and Piet Hein Tunnel.
Near Velsen, a combined tunnel-system for rail and road traffic. Between Petroleumhaven and Coenhaven a tunnel for road traffic.

In certain circumstances tugs are compulsory for lock clearance of the North and Middle lock. This depends on the summer deadweight, IMO-cargo and draft/beam license status of the ship.
Congestion can be experienced for lock clearance during extreme deviation of the high waters when the locks can come above level. The total lock capacity will be reduced temporarily then.
The North Sea locks have a certain capacity. Ships must realize that a regular and up dated ETA sent to Traffic Control can guarantee a lock clearance at arrival.

Towage and salvage
Sea-going tugs, harbour tugs and salvage vessels are available day and night at lJmuiden. Harbour tugs for the assistance of vessels in the North Sea Canal and in the docks of Amsterdam and Zaanstad are stationed at IJmuiden and at Amsterdam. Divers, pumps, underwater cutting plant, sheerlegs (capacity 60-90-125-130 and 300 tons) and further salvage equipment are available at short notice.
